Address Verification Service, or AVS, is a fraud prevention system that, when used effectively, can help limit fraud and chargebacks.
While the idea is great, the team that designed the response codes may be due for a revisit now that technology has progressed. Hopefully, this will happen soon, but until then, here are the AVS response codes and what they mean:

| A | Address matches but zip does not |
| S | AVS not supported |
| R | System unavailable, retry |
| U | Information not available |
| Z | Zip matches, address does not |
| N | Neither Zip nor Address matches |
| X | Address & Zip match |
